Woolmer Hill Wyverns† - Wyverns Top League
The high flying Pittsburgh Peacocks swooped into the Rackfield Arena in a match that on paper looked to be a real tight one.
The packed arena witnessed a real game of cat and mouse as each team fought hard to find the opener and to the dismay of the home fans it was the Peacocks that struck first. A great bit of give and go hockey led to the lighting of the red lamp and much jubilation on the Peacocks bench.
The Wyverns dug deep and were rewarded with an equaliser just a few minutes later and the first came to a close with both teams tied.
The pace never relented during the second and there was very little to seperate the teams. The breakthrough for the Wyverns came solely from a mistake from the Peacocks goalie. While attempting to play the puck up the ice it was intercepted for an easy tap in; a truely cruel way to lose the lead in such a game.
There was no more scoring in the game, but plenty of close calls as the Peacocks fought tooth and nail to take the game to overtime. A late barrage of the Wyverns goal was not quite enough and the roof was well and truley lifted as the final siren sounded and the chants rang around the stands.
Coach Saroun was photographed smiling at the end as he shook his charges hands. 'A good game for us tonight.' He said. 'But we must not let this get to our heads. They play well, we were lucky maybe that we score as we did. Now we must stay at the top and for that it will be hard.'
GM Ransom was jubilant and was the first to hand the beers out to his players in the locker room. 'Here's the reason I started in this business, happy fans, happy team, happy me.'
