Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 3 Issue 16: Gryphons Eliminated From Playoff Contention and Name New Leadership Group

The Guelph Gryphons have officially missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. A mere 7 games ago the Gryphons were sitting in 3rd spot in Canada’s I.1. However, since then, seven straight losses have saw them fall out of contention and today officially were knocked out of the playoffs with a 4-1 loss on home ice against the Burnaby Cougars.

“It’s certainly frustrating. We had a great start to the year and worked hard all year long. It is tough to watch it all slip away” said Captain Guy Richard who was informed after the game that the Gryphons would be heading in a new direction with leadership starting immediately.

We felt as an organization that Richard, Nicholson and Ebbrell had what it takes to lead this team to a top-8 finish. However, when the season was on the line our leaders did not deliver. This is why we have announced Antoine Slater as our new captain along with Dan Sharp and Matt Dupuis as assistants. These guys are younger, but still have experience. They will certainly bring a fresh change to the Gryphon’s dressing room” said Head Coach Stubbs.

The Gryphons will finish the year out on the road before playing to see if they will still be in I.1 next season. Look for some massive shake-ups if the Gryphons find themselves moving back down to the second division next season. However, given the quality of the franchise and the players on the ice, one can expect a turn around in the near future to keep the Gryphon train on it’s tracks.
