Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Final Edition: Transition to a New Era
This will mark the final edition of Gryph News. The publication has spanned 6 seasons and documented the ups and downs of one of Canada's historic franchises - a franchise that is moving in a new direction.
"We've been middle of the pack in I.1 for awhile now. We want a new identity. One that abolishes our ties to other sports clubs and sets our own identity. We feel the term Redshift symbolizes in many fashions what we are striving for. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term redshift, it is most simply explained as the doppler effect of light when something is moving away from an observer. Or, as we like to think, what you see when you're being left in the dust of someone travelling at the speed of light" chuckled canucks357. "Truth is, the name is more than that. It symbolizes our push forward, but also illustrates our connection with the physical sciences and the cosmos. Here in Guelph, or the Royal City as it is known, we pride ourselves on our successes on and off the ice. This name change brings the dawn of a new era for hockey in Guelph."
While an official logo and jersey has not been released, plans are already underway for the new look. The rink and puck will also need to be re-vamped. This brings to question, the true motives.
This new change will bring a massive influx of money from merchandise sales. However, canucks357 insists that is not the reasoning behind the change.
"Not at all. We have a loyal fan base that support us through thick and thin. If anything, this adds history to the Gryphon name. It becomes vintage!"
There are rumours that the team will bring back Gryphons logo and jerseys for some rival games, however that will have to be seen.
In other news, the team has signed new sponsors to a deal. The Reds will play their first season with Kroma Inc. cashing the big cheques and Channel @ covering the airways. Part of the Channel @ involved an upgrade to Veterans Memorial Arena clause which has been undertaken right away.
"We have long had plans to make VMA a world-class arena. Today we took another step to achieving that goal. By the end of the season the arena will hold over 5,000 people and have 3 corporate boxes. In a few more seasons we hope to fill the rink with 3 complete bowls before bringing capacity to 20,000 in the distant future."
Time will tell what the new identity will mean for the franchise. But at the moment, the transition has brought even more excitement to an already dedicated fan-base.
For the final time from Gryph News, take care and goodnight.
