Canada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 4 Issue 6: Garnett Shines as Canada Dominates Serbia in WHC Play

Canada opened the WHC tournament with a game in the top division against Serbia. The final tally would be 6-2 and fans would rejoice back in Canada. While the players are over in Slovenia battling it out for the ultimate prize, fans in Guelph watched diligently as one of their own was in the spotlight.

All fans that attend a Gryphon or OAP game during the tournament has free admission to the ultimate Team Canada party. The jumbotron of Veterans Memorial Arena to broadcast the game, and 3000+ fans to watch it. Many fans used this opportunity to watch Ian Garnett, a long-time Gryphon goalie, star for the nation.

I use the word "star" loosely, as he didn't actually play. But he did open a door on the bench and provide vital communication to the defencemen of our great nation.

"It was really cool seeing "The White Kevin" on the jumbotron. He is such a good goalie. I am very happy for him. We are lucky to have two goalies on Team Canada. I am proud to be a Gryphon fan!" said 11 year old Cindy Louwho.

While Garnett is not with the Gryphons on their camp, nor is he with the rest of the team finishing of the season with friendly matches, he is in Slovenia living a childhood dream. We interviewed him via Skype:

"I'm having a great time. The guys are great here. The country is, well, Slovenia. It has its gorgeous side and the areas you avoid. No different then Toronto!!! But in all seriousness it is a great experience. I'm getting to go to the rink and play with and against the best players from all over the world. I only wish my teammates could be here with me" said Ian "The White Kevin" Garnett.

Tim Newton has longtime been a member of Team Canada but has yet to dress in a competitive league match. When asked about how he feels about seeing his teammate dawn the red and white... "Exceptional! He is a great player and I'm glad I could be a part of his growth and maturation as a person and a player. I couldn't be happier for him" said Newton.

The WHC continues and Canada looks to build on it's first game with more wins to propel them into the second group stage.
