Canada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 3 Issue 8: Gryphons Defensive Game Weak as Barracudas Take Three Points

The Guelph Gryphons were unsuccessful in their question for 3 points on Monday when they traveled to face Barracudas. The Gryphons wanted to play a tight checking road game to ensure a victory. However, when the PK goes 1/4 and your goaltender has a less-than stellar outing, it is no wonder the Gryphons dropped the game by a score of 5-2.

"We were not happy with our performance tonight. We played sound offensively, but in the defensive zone we were terrible. And that is putting it lightly. We've been focusing on scoring goals these past few weeks that I think we forgot what got us here in the first place. Our penalty kill was (censored). Our goaltending was not on par with his efforts this season thus far. Everyone in this room knows what it takes to win and everyone in the room knows the effort put forth Monday was not that. Expect better Wednesday against Cougars de Montréal" said Head Coach Stubbs.

Tim Newton had been on fire so far this season, however he only lasted 40min on Monday night before Ian Garnett entered in relief for the struggling goaltender.

"It was one of those nights where it just wasn't happening. It was frustrating for myself as it was for my teammates. I felt no different out there than I had all season. It was just one of those days. I know everyone has confidence in me and I have confidence in myself. We have moved on as a team and will focus on securing some more wins" said Newton who slipped to second in sv% among goalies with at least 33% playing time.

Ian Garnett on the other hand has been patient all season. "I had a good run last season. I felt I really contributed to the team getting to I.1. However injuries have hurt my playing time thus far. Tim has played outstanding and there has been no need to change that. Clearly I want to play, but right now so long as we are winning I'm happy to be a part of it" said Ian very professionally.

The Gryphons' home game on Wednesday will feature the new decor laid under the ice of Veterans Memorial Arena. Corporate sponsors and some new graphics have been laid out to coincide with the renovations in place to make VMA a top-tier arena in Canada and the world.
