Upsets Abound!
Portagers fans were brought back to earth recently as the boys dropped 2 league games in a row. Quebec's Faucons beat the boys 6-3 in front of a packed house at the Rideout Community Club. "They out-hustled us and out-tacticed us", explained coachb while shoveling the rink after the game. "I couldnt get anything past their new goalie!" said Portagers' resident Swede Elias Hedlund, who had 5 shots but nothing to show for it. Two days later, the boys hit the road to meet up with the New Hawks and came up short again, losing 2-1. "It was a real close game. I think we should have opened it up offensively, but they seemed to have us on our heels." explained Portagers' top goal-scorer 'Barney' Erdelyi. The Portagers still sit atop the league, but are now only 3 points away from Faucons.
Goalies
After Janis Jonitis' departure from the Portagers crease to return to his Latvian homeland, the team landed a replacement recently. "Portagers staff today have come to terms with Chech goalie Vladmir Kroscen. We hope to build on our success and plan for our future. We hope Vladdy will be here for a long time." Coachb was quoted during the goalie's introduction yesterday. This now makes the number of goalies 4 in the system. Too many cooks in the kitchen? Stay tuned, folks.
Tournament Shenanigans
The boys dropped the last 3 games of the MAX 30 tournament. After splitting two games with the pink jerseyed Gothiches, they just kept losing. "We didn't bring our 'A' game and we were outclassed" explained coachb after the final game.
The Portagers have been accepted into Beginners Cup II and will play weekends for credits starting in the middle of Februaury.
B-Squad
The Portagers' friendly games have seen the boys play all over the world recently. Games in the Dominican Republic, Slovakia and Turkey were well received and now the party is coming to an end. "This globe-trotting is getting pretty expensive. We will be playing more derby games for friendlies in the future, I assure you." warned Portagers assistant sporting director, Mitch May
