Canada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 2 Issue 10: Gryphons Drop to 6-2 on the Season with Their Second Straight Loss

The Guelph Gryphons faced the Vancouver Vanucks at home at Veterans Memorial Arena in hopes to snap their losing streak. The game saw the lowest crowd of the season visit VMA, with just under 1,500 on hand for the game.

The game started well for the Gryphons, with Maurice Ebbrell scoring first with help from O'Brien (back from injury) and Kennedy. The lead would not last long as Cloutier and Peer would put the Vanucks ahead 2-1 heading into the second period despite Guelph outshooting their opposition 11-9 in the frame.

The second period saw more action for the Vanucks. After Teodor Vaverka (also just back from injury) scored a powerplay goal to tie it at two, the Vanucks would add three goals to make it 5-2 after the second period despite the Gryphons once again outshooting them in the period.

Two minutes into the third Vancouver made it 6-2 and many fans left their seats in frustration. However, the leadership core of the Gryphons lead when needed as Jacob Neil initiated a third period comeback attempt. With under three minutes left Vaverka would get his second of the game followed 20s later by the captain Richard cutting the deficit to a single goal. The Gryphons had a glourious chance to tie the game with a minute left as a Dan Sharp one-timer was deflected in front but did not slide past the visiting goalie. The Vanucks would hold on to a 6-5 win despite being outshot every period.

"I don't think we played our best tonight. We seemed to save our best for the end of the game when it was almost out of hand. I don't think we got the best performances from our best players tonight either. Your stars have to be the stars if you want to win. It was nice to see Vaverka back and in form to pot a couple goals. We seem to have trouble finding the net these days so his offensive talent is a welcome addition. As far as future plans, I don't think it is necessary to make any major changes. Tim played the last two games and couldn't get the results we were hoping for. Garnett will play Friday on the road. We will need to go into their rink and steal one. He's played well this year so we will need more of the same" said Head Coach Stubbs.

The Gryphons also made a couple moves since the last installment of Gryph News. "The Gryphons have spent the cash to aquire Matouš Žák, an 18 year old Czech forward. He has a bright future ahead of him and it will take time for him to contribute on a daily basis. We are hoping for him to solidify himself as a center or winger but there is no rush there. He has burr in his side most nights and loves to get dirty in the corners. Wherever he plays he will surely get under the opponents' skin. He definitely needs to improve his skating and puck handling but can surely be an impact player down the strech" said Manager Mark Clode. "We also acquired Russian equipment manager Pavel Dyadin. Pavel will work along side Domicjan Sidor, Felix Casper and Maurice Edinburgh in taking care of the players and Veterans Memorial Arena."

The Gryphons also sold James Locke to Czech V.160 HC Březnice Predators. Sporting Director David Alcide is also confirmed to be on his way out.

In friendly game news, the Gryphons faced the Romanian club, Deva Red Wings. The Gryphons won both games, taking the first game 7-2 on the road then winning 4-1 at home. The Gryphons will now face the 5th place Vancouver Giants. A loss could see the Gryphons slip down into 7th place potentially.
