Vancouver Giants† - Giant Report - Issue 1
The Vancouver Giants opened up their season today with high expectations after two straight playoff failures. They played Skillz That Killz in their season opener on the road, a team that has given the Giants troubles in the past. The first goal of the Giants season was scored by Jozef Zima, and it opened the floodgates for both teams. No team held a two goal lead throughout the whole game while the goals kept piling up. A late goal by top forward David Kvansnicka sent the game into overtime, where Stuart Moncur shut the door. The game ended in a 7-7 draw as the Giants season gets off to a slow start. "It was a good showing by our offense today, they kept finding holes in the goalie and kept putting the puck in the net. We'll take the one point and look forward to getting our first win at home on Wednesday" said head coach Yannick Abrahams of the game today.
As the season opened up the Giants were looking to improve on their 7th place finish in the playoffs. One of their big moves in the off-season was moving forward Louis Flatts to the top line, replacing Bransilav Galo at right wing. The big forward impressed the coaching staff last season, scoring almost a point a game while on the third line. The team also moved defensive prospects Trevor Duberry and Donavan Livingston into the lineup, the Giants are expecting them to become the teams' top defensemen in a couple of seasons.
The managers were also hard at work this off-season, rewarding the Giant fans with an upgraded stadium to begin this season. The Giants had the biggest stadium in their league coming into this off-season, and they continued to build on it, expanding their capacity to 2600 seats. The team is likely done with stadium renovations for the season as they look to improve their facilities to compete with those in the top leagues.
As the Giants look forward to their fourth season, expectations are high among fans, still bitter about their team's poor performance in the playoffs. However, the fans are excited about their chances this year to move into the top league of Canada. The pressure will fall on goalie Stuart Moncur's shoulders, as he will be starting most of the games this year after taking the starting job from Mile Micic late last season. From everyone in the Vancouver Giants organization, we wish all
teams good luck in the upcoming season.
