Канада Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 1 Issue 26: Gryphons Sweep Round 1, Round 2 Opponent T.B.D.

The Guelph Gryphons played a sound road game in Quebec to take home a 6-1 series ending win in front of a sold out dodge arena. The Gryphons took the series in 2 straight with a combined score of 18-2. The Gryphons outshot their opponent in Game 2 30 to 16 while their powerplay did not manage to muster a goal on 4 opportunities.

"I'm pleased with the result. But we must not get complacent. There was never a doubt in our mind we would get past the first round. It was a good tune-up for our club and now we just wait and see who our opponent will be in the second round. It will prove to be a much more challenging and spirited round for sure" said Coach Stubbs.

The Gryphons' 4th line was +4 on the night contributing 4 of the 6 goals (all at even strength). Leading the way was Sheringham (1G, 3A) and Neil (2G, 2A) each with four points. The Gryphons' second line got the other two goals seeing David Peake bury both of them with all of his linemates getting an assist.

"It was really good to see our depth players contribute tonight. They battled hard and are consistent for us every night. Their defense was sound and they put the puck in the net in four of the seven shots they created. We will need more efforts like that from them down the stretch as depth becomes more and more of an increasing factor in games" said assistant coach Cole. "Add to that another solid performance from Tim Newton and I think we are starting to get all the gears turning in the right direction. Add to that Turnbull is recovering ahead of schedule... things are good."

Perhaps the biggest surprise of this post-season was the disappearance of Maurice Ebbrell from the scoresheet. Despite playing on the top line, Ebbrell is the only Gryphon player in the two games to not get a point despite 4 shots on goal. "Clearly the points haven't been there for me thus far in the post-season but points aren't what matters. I'm a +1 and the team is 2-0. That is all I care about. I think the chemistry I have with Vavs (Teodor Vaverka) and Kens (Matthew Kennedy) is outstanding and it will only be a matter of time before that pays off. Read into my 0pts however you wish, but that is not what matters. We all know that. There is no panic in my game. I am confident and my teammates support my efforts thus far" said Maurice Ebbrell who scored his 50th career league goal and 100th career league point this year and put up 22G and 58 points this season.

"Ebbs (Ebbrell) will put up some points. We don't have our doubts. Last year in the playoffs he put up 4 points but more importantly he was a +3 in the 8 games. We all support his game right now. He is playing with confidence and most importantly commitment to the defensive aspect of the game. There is no happier teammate than myself with that" said goaltender Tim Newton who has a 1.00GAA and 0.923sv% thus far in the post-season. Newton has been remarkable in his two seasons posting an impressive 1.73GAA and 0.911sv% along with 21SO in all competitive matches so far in his career. His only falter is his sv% is well below .900 in his career playoffs (0.888sv%). Add to this 8 goals on 32 shots in the deciding game of the league finals last year, and Newton may have his playoff critics.

"Tim is a hard worker. He has really developed his game. I for one am amazed at his work ethic. He has definitely improved considerably since last years playoff run. His has a wealth of experience and there is not another goaltender in the world I would rather have in net for our run to II.2. We all have faith in him, as do the fans. We have all grown as a team and Newts (Newton) is a focal part of our success. Any doubts in his critics will surely be put to rest in the next few weeks" said injured defenseman Ian Newell who is still about a week away from a full recovery from his collar bone injury.

The Gryphons make a short trip to Switzerland where they will face SC Bern tomorrow. They will return home for Game 1 on Wednesday for an opponent that is yet to be determined.
