Канада Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 1 Issue 32: Gryphons Lose in III.7 Finals Once Again as Kitchener Canucks Hoist the III.7 League Trophy

The Guelph Gryphons lost to the Kitchener Canucks in game 2 of the best of three series, allowing the Canucks to skate away with the league's playoff title. Once again, the Gryphons outshot their opponent, but were unable to find the net on their 21 shots losing 3-0 on the night.

Many critics will be analyzing the Gryphons' playoff performance, focusing on several key components of their team. Once again Tim Newton has failed to seal the deal in the III.7 finals. There is no doubt he is a franchise goaltender, but does he have the ability to win the big games? Many fans are questioning the faith Coach Stubbs has shown in the young goaltender. Many argue that Ian Garnett should get the start in the promotion/relegation round games. Fact is, nobody knows who will be starting in those games. "Right now we need to discuss where we go from here. As a team we are very irate with our performance in this series. We need to refocus our efforts and focus on winning the next series. It is absolutely critical for our franchise. I will not be discussing any individual performances at this time" said Coach Stubbs.

Also to be criticized for their play this series was the play of Vaverka, Kennedy, Richard, Kite and most of the leadership core. They were all held to zero points in the two games. "We simply didn't execute this series. Give the Canucks full credit. This is not the type of mood we were expecting in the dressing room at this time a couple days ago. We are accountable for our play and will be sure to finish the job next round" said Captain Guy Richard.

The Gryphons will have to wait and see who they will face in the promotion/relegation round. Last season they lost to Can junior. They will face the loser of Friday's game between MTL CH and Drunken Monkeys. Both clubs are strong and will provide considerable opposition for the Gryphons. The series will begin on Monday the 23rd and finish on Wednesday the 25th (if necessary).

Should the Gryphons fail to make it to II.2 this season, look for some major off-season changes by the club. Due to losing the the finals, the club has announced the availability of several staff and players for transfer. Most notably is Edward Turnbull. Turnbull has been a fixture on the Gryphons blueline, playing all 76 competitive league games in franchise history. After his injury at the start of the playoffs he lost his spot in the blueline and the club has decided his services could be better used elsewhere. More similar changes could be seen in the future should the Gryphons not win two of their next three competitive games. Hopefully this feeling that "nobody's job is safe" will inspire their efforts further.
