Kanada Vancouver Giants† - Giant Report - Issue 7

In what was supposed to be the breakout season for the Giants has ended once again in heartbreak, with a familiar exit from the playoffs in the first round by the hands of Skillz That Killz. After splitting the first two games at home, the Giants returned home in front of an almost packed house who saw what was ultimately the last game of the season. The Giants struck first at 2:48 of the second period when replacement player Jozef Zima buried one past the keeper, the Giants first goal since late in game 1. The Giants kept that score until the first play of the third period, when Micah Dobie evened the score. With two minutes left, many of the crowd were expecting yet another overtime game 3, much like two seasons ago in the shootout defeat against the Incredible Foes, but those hopes were dashed when starting goaltender Stuart Moncur let in a weak shot from the point at 18:55 of the third period. The game was over, and the Giants are once again stuck in II.2 for next season.

In the locker room after the game, there was a lot of anger from the players and management following yet another choke. “That was an absolutely pathetic game played by us today, there should have been no way that Skillz could have beaten us.” captain Louis Flatts remarked. “We’ve become the San Jose Sharks of the PPM, I can’t believe we let them get past us” Will Himsworth told reporters. General manager Javi Coro couldn’t be reached for comment, one reporter claimed that he saw Coro storming out of the arena and slamming the convertible door behind him as it sped off.

As a result of their elimination, the Giants once again have moves to make to shape up their team. One rumour floating around is that the Giants could be shipping starting goaltender Stuart Moncur out and naming Mile Micic their new starter. Whatever the case, the Giants currently have 46 players on their roster, 3 of whom are up for sale tomorrow. The Giants would want to keep the roster close to or at 40 players for their season opener so expect more moves as the offseason progresses.

Reflecting back on what was a milestone season for the Giants, some would say it was a success based on the fact that they did finish first in the division by 8 points, thereby claiming their first ever trophy. There were breakout performances from many players, including Louis Flatts and Bonifac Bistak. However, this season will be remembered for an embarrassing 4th round exit in the National Cup and losing the first round as the 1st seed. When asked how he would sum up the season, coach Yannick Abrahams only had one word. “Disappointment”. The Giants kick off season 6 on Monday, November 1st.
