Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 4 Issue 3: Newton Makes Case for Team Canada

It was what one would have expected to be dubbed "a battle of the goalies" when the Montreal Strippers led by long time Team Canada starting goalie Noah Tierney came to Guelph to face the Gryphons and their National goalies. Tim Newton would get the start and would be extremely motivated.

"I was told by the Team Canada staff that I would be #5 for the team this year. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Instead of dwelling on the fact that I likely won't dawn the jersey this year, I took it upon myself to battle every game and force them to play me. What better time then with the golden-boy Tierney in town" said Newton of his Team Canada teammate.

The game would be Gryphon dominated as the (at the start of game time) 8th seeded Gryphons would continue to take the pressure to the 3rd seeded Strippers. At the end of the night, the Gryphons would get 4 by Tierney on 31 shots and Newton would take home his first shutout of the season.

"The boys played extremely well. I've been working hard all year and it feels good to shut down last year's champs and also get a win on Noah. We may be friends off the ice, but there is no better person to get a win over then him. We now have to prepare for tomorrow's national cup game followed by game 23 (of 38) of the league Wednesday. Both games are critical. Coach Stubbs informed me that I would be starting tomorrow but Garnett would likely get the call on Wednesday" continued Newton.

The game was one Gryphon fans will remember for weeks to come. After the game, shops around Veterans Memorial Arena were handing out signs for free saying "Noah Who? Newts for Team Canada!" and flags saying a similar motto in order to try and get their beloved star back in the lineup for Team Canada.

"Newton is my favourite player. He is very good. He stops lots of goals. I like him. He is best player in the world. I want to be just like him" said little Shellie quite shyly.

It would appear the game was also good news to the Gryphon budget. As a bunch of Newton jerseys flew off the shelves after the game and Team Canada jerseys have been ordered that have Tierney on the back with a question mark for the number. Marketing reports "hey, we don't tell the fans what to buy. We just give them what sells." It would appear it is working. The Gryphons reportedly have grossed half a million in fan sales this season, including nearly $50,000 from last game alone.
