Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 5 Issue 3: Gryphons Miss Playoff Birth But Show They Can Contend in I.1 and Announce Market Transfers

The Guelph Gryphons were hoping to improve on last season's 18 wins and 64 point performance that saw them finish 8th in a tight I.1. They scored 121 goals and gave up 92 for a +29 goal difference. This season, the Gryphons finished 10th, and a large reason for that is their lack of score mid-season. While the goals against at the end of the season was one lower then a year ago with 91 over 38 games, the goals for totaled a mere 109. While their +18 goal difference ranks them 5th in the league in that category at the end of the season, losing many close games and winning by decent margins means Guelph will have to wait another season to challenge for the I.1 title.

"You can look at this season one of two ways. First, we didn't do as well as last season and something's gotta give. Or... we had a great start, and great finish but we lost out in the middle stretch. However, in the process we've introduced many new faces into the lineup and this will only make our team stronger in time" said Captain Guy Richard who finishes with 17pts through another 38 games played bringing his consecutive league games total to 228 games (or 6 full seasons). "Not only have we gotten younger, but we've gotten better as a club. Our facilities have improved. Our arena is currently in the development stages of expansion. We have lots of really good young prospects in the system too. We've said goodbye to some good players this season, but each move has been made to better our franchise" said Guy who along with Marcel Fournier will be Free Agents at some point next season.

"Obviously we both want to stay here. We've been here since day 1, but at the same time we're going to be 25 and we gotta start thinking longterm finances at the same time. The end decision is ultimately up to management and I have every confidence that they'll do what's right for the team." Fournier was unavailable for questioning by the media as he was given the evening to spend time with his pregnant girlfriend. Sources say he wants to finish his career in Guelph however with a child on the way would be more open to a larger contract even at the expense of relocation.

In transfer news, the Gryphons have sold the long time fan-favourite triple-D line of Dan Sharp, Dan Bruce and David Peake. The trio were hoping to stay together but their services ultimately ended up heading in separate directions with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania being their new homes.

"I'm clearly sad to leave. It's been a great start to a career here. But it boils down to a business and management felt that my services were no longer needed and it was better for the club to get something for me in return. I'm glad they got a good price for the three of us and Oskar and that they transferred us to clubs where we will be leaders and able to compete for many seasons to come. We will never forget the chants of "The Triple-D Line! The only thing better than Double-Ds!" It was really fun being a part of this organization and it's fans. I wish everyone all the best in the future" said David Peake the top scorer in II.2 during Guelph's season there.

In playoff news, Guelph will be playing the Halifax Lazybones in playoff action. Pundits are expecting Guelph to advance and thus ensure another chance to contend for a I.1 title. Look for Tim Newton to continue to get the bulk of the workload despite playing 40 minutes in the last season game which Guelph won 5-4.
