Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 3 Issue 5: Gryphons Win First Game at Home in Convincing Fashion

The Guelph Gryphons were in tough again on Monday as they hosted the Montreal Strippers, a team with more than enough firepower to win the game in a matter of seconds. Due to the strong playing ability of Team Canada's goalie, Noah Tierney, the Gryphons expected the Strippers to play a sound road game. That is, one of tact defensive play.

"We knew the type of game they were going to play. Having played with Teirns (Noah Tierney) on the national team, I think Newts (Tim Newton) and I have a bit of know-how there when it comes to how to beat him. We had a couple hour meeting the morning before the game and I think it paid off" said Captain Guy Richard.

The Gryphons came out flying. Their aggressive play cost them a penalty in the first few seconds of the game, but the energy and roar of the crowd was more than enough to stop the surging Strippers powerplay. Shortly after, Veterans Memorial Arena would blow the roof off as veteran Jacob Neil and the third line would score to take a 1-0 lead. The Gryphons continued the offensive attack tossing a total of 12 shots on goal in the first frame. After 20 minutes they would be up 2-0 with the second goal coming from the stick of Jody Perrett.

The Strippers would respond in the second period with dominating play of their own. However, after 40 minutes Tim Newton would have 22 saves to his name and a 4-0 lead to work with courtesy of 2 goals from the top line of Vaverka, Slater (would finish with 3 points on the night), Sharp, O'Brien and Richard.

The four goals on 22 shots for Tierney would end his day pre-maturely. "I don't think so much he had a bad game, more that we just took advantage of our opportunities. I'm obviously good buddies with Tierns but people shouldn't blame him for today's outcome. On a more positive note though I felt our team performance was very sound today" said Gryphon goalie Tim Newton. Newton would finish with 28 saves on 29 shots, and the lone goal breaking the shutout with 9min left in the game. "Our top players were our top players tonight. That is what it takes to win and today we did just that. It feels really good too!"

Veterans Memorial Arena was sold out for the game. Arena upgrades reduced capacity to 1,750. Any fans who were denied tickets were given all-access passes to Gryph's across the street where they could watch the game in 3D with fellow Gryphon fans.
