Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 3 Issue 9: Newton and Gryphon Defensive Game Returns to Form as Gryphons Shut Out Cougars de Montréal; Gryphon Management Announce Partnership with Italian Club

The Guelph Gryphons returned to form on Wednesday as they defeated Cougars de Montréal by a score of 2-0. Some fans were asking for Coach Stubbs to start Ian Garnett after Newton's sub-par performance on Monday but Stubbs was adamant that the veteran goaltender get a shot at redemption. Also earning some accolades was Wes Ingelthorpe who notched a goal in today's game. Ingelthorpe has been out of the lineup and rumoured on his way out of town until a Mike Doherty injury saw the Gryphon sniper find his way back onto the ice.

"It was nice to get a win today. Sure scoring was nice, but I felt I really contributed to today's win. But today is not about me and my return. It is about Newts. With that I want to go celebrate his shutout and I'll leave you with coach Stubbs" said Ingelthorpe as he snuck up behind Newton and put him in a friendly head-lock.

"There was never a doubt in my mind that Tim would start today. He has been phenomenal all season, I did not see the need to change anything because of one single game. Let's face it, Tim did not play bad... the whole team did! We wanted to really focus our efforts on a strong defensive game and getting back to form in that category. I felt that we did just that today" said Head Coach Stubbs.

The Gryphons held their opponents to a mere 23 shots and only mustered 27 themselves. Thankfully the 14th best shooting percentage is matched with the leagues absolute best save percentage.

"It felt really good to bounce back and get a win. The fans and the teammates were behind me all the way. The fact it was a shutout just goes to show how badly everyone wanted it. I'm proud I was in net for the franchise's first I.1 shutout" said Tim Newton who was then asked about his role on this year's Team Canada. "Obviously I want to be part of the team. I saw a bit of action last season which really spiked my drive to succeed. Clearly I would be lying if I said that I have really wanted to impress canucks357 this season with my play in hopes of earning a more pivotal role with Team Canada but at the same time I know the caliber of talent on the club and will need more than a string of strong performances to solidify some playing time."

Newton has been consistent all year. He leads I.1 in GAA with a sparkling 1.81 goals against average and is first among domestic goalies with a save percentage of 93.14%. The Gryphons will face a familiar Vancouver Vanucks club on Friday when they will be sporting their flashy third jerseys against their former II.2 rival.

Guelph Gryphons management is pleased to announce a partnership with "My Alleghe Stars" of the Italian II.1 league. canucks357 and caiocullen are said to have discussed terms over the game between the two clubs on Tuesday. The two managers are currently head of their respective national teams and will be looking to use this partnership to market their club in foreign markets.

"I am very happy to welcome caiocullen and My Alleghe Stars to the Gryphon family. We may be foes on the ice but off the ice any one of the Stars are family here in Guelph. Due to the partnership, you will be able to find Stars apparel anywhere Gryphons clothing is sold. We will also be modifying our jerseys to include the logo of our sister club. Any fans who have purchased this year's jerseys can come by Veterans Memorial Arena tomorrow when the Gryphons host the Salisbury North Stars to get a patch for their existing jerseys. We will also be giving away partnership t-shirts to the first 1,000 fans who show up for the game next Wednesday against the first place Reflex de Montréal" said canucks357 in a press release held today at Veterans Memorial Arena after the game.
