Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 3 Issue 18: Gryphons Win and Advance to 9th Place Playoff

The Guelph Gryphons have completely saved their season. The team that was once atop I.1 and even 3rd with a few weeks to play was facing relegation when the lost 8 straight games to end the season. Management and players sat through meeting after meeting to turn the tides on the season. Now, the Gryphons have won 2 straight series' and are looking to make it a third straight when the face Bulldogs de Terrebone for the 9th spot in Canada's top division.

So what changed? Well, it's not secret. Out were the young talents and in were the veterans who were in the trenches when the Gryphons made the trip from III.7 to II.2 and to I.1. These veterans secured a series win first against FlyingHeadz, a team the Gryphons had yet to beat and followed it up with a series win against MaGoo who was the higher seed and had home-ice advantage.

"I'm proud of our boys" said Head Coach Stubbs. We really battled through adversity at the end of this season and I think it will make us better in the long run. We got some young faces some game time and also find ourselves in a respectable position in our inaugural season in I.1. The league is filled with top tier teams and players. We are proud to have duked it out along side them and have worked hard to ensure we will be given the same opportunity next season."

The Gryphons have called in Tim Newton all season. "The Franchise" as he is called by the fans was sitting proudly atop the goalie statistics category but when his numbers started to slide, so did the numbers of the Gryphons.

"We are a team that needs to work on scoring goals. If you look at the numbers we win games but having our opponent score less goals then us, not by scoring more goals then them if you follow" said newly appointed Captain Antoine Slater. "Newton is a big part of our success. We have a strong defence to help him out and forwards who work hard in the defensive zone. That is what made us successful and that is what we got back to in recent weeks."

"I don't think I've changed my game too much. The only thing that really has changed is that (censored) Tierney calling me at 4am on game nights. We made a pact in playoffs to leave eachother alone at night and not wake the other up before games. I think you've seen his play improve in the playoffs, hopefully mine has too" chucked Newton. Newton and Tierney are two of the four goalies that will be trying to propel Canada in the WHC starting this weekend. Also on that team are Gryphons Martin O'Brien and Antoine Slater.

In transaction news, rumour has it that Gryphon management is looking to unload a serious group of players. While nobody would comment, sources claim that as many as 28 or 30 players could be playing elsewhere at the start of next season. While many of these players are prospects, the anonymous source did claim that some long-time Gryphon veterans would be in the mix as well. One would expect an official statement once the playoffs are over and all formalities are concluded to avoid distracting the team in their quest for 9th.
