Flowers Cup Champions!
The boys finished an extremely competitive credit tournament this weekend and ended up winning the final. The team won enough credits to purchase an on-ice design for the arena at Rabbit Lake.
The Portagers barely squeaked into the playoff round of the tournament. On paper, the boys were outclassed but with consistency and discipline the Portagers rolled a peppy 4 line assault and with the help of Branislav Chudada, Ulvis Mernieks and Canadian rookie sensation Erik LaBerge, the Canoeheads stunned the competition. "It was a total team effort" said the Portagers' star Swiss goalie Gunter Dinkel after his 3-0 shutout win against Miska TEAM in the semi-final. The tournament final against ASIE was a real barn-burner and after the dust settled, the Portagers came out on top 6-5. Following his hat-trick performance, team captain Branislav Chudada commended his teammates and the other teams in the tournament. "It seems like any obstacle we face.....we just plow through....we just seem to find a way. We have alot of great guys on this team and it seems we are getting better all the time. These were some tough teams in this tournament. I thought we were down for the count last weekend but we made the playoffs and...holy crap that Swiss bugger between the pipes we have is really the cat's pyjamas."
Scoreboard!
Rabbit Lake received a facelift recently and fans now have a big-league scoreboard to look at in the rafters! "What's the point of having a hockey game without knowing what the score is?" said coachb during the warmup for the tournament final. Rabbit Lake capacity has also been increased following the expansion of the south end stand-ups. Coachb says plans are in the works to get a multifunctional facility on the east side of the rink in the near future. "It would be nice to be able to have a skybox or two. We could use the revenue from the added capacity, too"
Portagers still king of the Canadian League IV.11 castle!
The boys are undefeated since their game 1 loss this season. With the folding of the two most competitive teams in the league, is seems as though the Portagers are the team to beat. "I've never been on a team that kicked so much butt!" quipped Portagers winger Karol 'loser' Luz.
"B" Squad
The depth of the Portagers' lineup has been evident as friendly matches with BlackWings Legion Germany's L.A. Kings were extremely even and up-tempo. "I can't believe I'm not playing in the big games. I'm training harder than ever now. As if that Laberge kid is in there lighting it up and I'm only playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays." Commented the 'B' squad's captain, Canadian Honore Lajeunesse.
Coachb summed up the Portagers situation simply. "It's nice to have options. We want these guys to constantly improve. A little competition is good to stir the pot. Now I know I can rely on anybody on the bench if we need them.
