Canadá Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 1 Issue 31: Gryphons Drop Game 1 to Rivals in a Closely Matched Affair

The Guelph Gryphons, for the first time this season, have lost a competitive match in regulation. The Kitchener Canucks arrived at Veterans Memorial Arena and skated to a 4-2 victory over the hometown Gryphons. The game was scoreless until half-way through the second period when Kitchener opened the scoring. Kitchener would eventually rally to a 3-0 lead. The Gryphons clawed back into the game making it 3-2 with 12min left but eventually lost 4-2.

The injury to Antoine Slater has definitely impacted the club. The Gryphons only managed 2 goals on the 32 shots they created at Bob Parent. Dan Bruce was added to the lineup in the absence of Slater but was unable to bury a goal on his four attempts at goal.

The real question now is, how will the Gryphons respond to not only their first loss, but losing the most important game of the year?

"Clearly the result was not what we had hoped for tonight. We will regroup and refocus for tomorrow's game. We are a strong club and will expect a much better performance tomorrow. That is all for now" said head coach Stubbs.

Few of the Gryphon staff and players would comment after the game. Guy Richard spoke briefly to the media however. "We did not take them lightly, but more importantly we did not execute. I think we were well prepared, we just didn't make them pay for their mistakes. We can't fault any single guy in this room here, but we must take a good hard look in the mirror and realize how close we are to missing out on our goal. We have come this far, it is simply unacceptable to let it slide out through our fingers. We have quality professional players in this room and I have every confidence in every player that we will get the job done."

Game 2 goes Tuesday in Kitchener. The III.7 trophy will be on hand should the Gryphons lose the game. However, everyone is hoping to see the trophy hosted by the hometown Gryphons at home after game 3. There were a lot of upset fans after the game, but they were treated to a great game. One can only hope for more excitement in the games to come.
