Frostbite Record Second Consecutive Top 5 Finish
Minnesota Frostbite - Frostbite Reach Semifinals for First Time; Finish Third
The Minnesota Frostbite reached the semifinals for the first time in franchise history and were awarded the third place trophy. Additionally, the Frostbite's fourth place regular season was the best in team history, and Minnesota advanced to the third round of the National Cup for the first time. "It was a great feeling to finally have a trophy to put in the case" said GM Joe, "and our fans should know that we are committed to continuing the fight to win a championship and hopefully promote to the top league."
Patrick Black was recognized with the 5th highest save percentage in the league with a 90.42 save percentage, and reached both the 30 and 40 shutout milestones in the same season. Gene Stephens also recorded his 40th shutout this year. Vince Mott notched his 600th career point and 300th career assist. On a play Philip Cook will always remember, he recorded his 500th career point and 300th career assist on the same goal, and also scored his 200th career goal this year. Milton Morris and Clint Winters both also reached the 500 point and 200 goal milestones, with Winters also recording his 300th assist. Douglas Franklin, Lonnie Benoit, Clint Hart, and Melvin Bonner all hit 400 career points this year. Ed Snow, Jim Cuevas, and Matt Vandyke got their 300th career points, with Snow and Cuevas also scoring their 100th career goals and Snow and Vandyke got their 200th career assists. Clyde Li, Harry Chestnut, Thad Crocker, and Donovan Dailey reached 200 career points, with Dailey and Crocker each getting their 100th career assists. Paul Arevalo scored his 100th career goal, and while Casey Marks and Elmer Benton recorded their 100th career assists.
There were some exciting new additions to the team. The team called up left winger Damon Winstead from the sports academy. "I think Damon is going to be an explosive winger in this league for a long time, he is going to hit hard, shoot hard, and create a lot of offense" said Joe. To make room for Winstead, the Frostbite had to part ways with left winger Bill Straus. Straus played 71 games over the course of 7 seasons with the team, scoring 14 goals, 15 assists, and 29 points. "Bill will be missed" Joe said, "he was always ready when we needed him, and fans will never forget the time he filled in for an injured teammate and led us to a win with a 4-goal effort." Minnesota also added defenseman John Atwood in the midseason draft. "John is a sound, well-rounded defenseman who can play on either side of the ice, which should open up a lot of options for how we use him" Joe said. To make room for Atwood, the Frostbite had to bid farewell to defenseman Charles Cowan. Cowan was the inaugural captain of the Frostbite, and scored 2 goals, 4 assists, and 6 points in 55 games spread over 7 seasons with the team. "Charles was the consummate professional and a great leader" Joe said, "he was a key part of this team as its captain when we first took the ice, and even though he got passed up in the lineup, he continued to bring his leadership to the friendly games working with some of our younger players."
Lecturer Damon Duncan, who served as both head lecturer and assistant lecturer during six years with the team, retired. "Damon was a key part of our staff development, and he has earned a good retirement" Joe said.
The team has continued to improve its facilities and arena, with an expansion that will increase capacity to 2850 set to be completed just in time for the new season. "We continue to be amazed at the fan support we get" Joe said, "and we are working hard to make sure we provide enough seats for all the folks who want to come watch."
In international play, GM Joe managed the USA U20 team for the fifth straight year, and led them to a Division I title at the World Championships, earning promotion to the Top Division for the first time in a 12 years.
