Kanada Royal City Redshift - Gryph News - Vol 2 Issue 19: Gryphons Win in National Cup to Advance to Fourth Round and Win in League Play to Solidify Second Place

The Guelph Gryphons were in action on Tuesday against 13 Silver Rhinos. Veterans Memorial Arena was sold out at 2,000 fans for the cup game. The Rhinos are leading the Canadian IV.9 division and would surely bring some stiff competition.

"We knew we couldn't take them for granted. We needed to execute" said Captain Guy Richard.

The Gryphons executed to perfection, winning the game 9-1. The Gryphons outshot the Rhinos 36-19 with 9 Gryphon skaters getting 2 points on the night to lead the offence. Ian Garnett made 18 saves for the win.

The next night, the Gryphons hosted crosseur de poule morte. Over 1,800 fans came to see the league match which promised to be chippy and entertaining. The Gryphons entered the second period with a 2 goal lead, both goals were scored by Ben Palmer from Dan Sharp and David Peake. Ten minutes into the second crosseur de poule morte would have the game tied at 2-2 with some strong play by the visitors. Gryphons Head Coach Stubbs would call a time out to re-focus his club.

"I just wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. We were dominating the play and just made two small mistakes which they capitalized on. I needed to make sure that everyone did not panic. In hindsight, we have a very experienced group, especially our leadership core, and we likely would have been fine without one but it seemed to work nonetheless" said Head Coach Stubbs.

The talk did seem to work indeed. The Gryphons would score five unanswered goals to take the game 7-2. The shots were 35-16 in favour of Guelph with Ian Garnett picking up the win. David Peake lead the offence with four assists.

"It was a big night for a few guys on our team. Kennedy did not reach the 100 point plateau but it will happen soon. Garnett has been leading the way in goal for us so far, and is tops in the league in GAA, sv% and SO (minimum 8GP). Likewise, with Peake's 4 assist effort tonight, he moved up to third spot with 23 points, two points behind the injured Classic player, Emile Dubois for the league lead. With Richard's two assists, he now leads all defencemen in scoring. People were a little critical of our players individual statistics earlier in the year, as we did not even have a player in the top 50 several games back. But everyone in our room worries about winning first. The good thing about our club is we have lots of committed players and lots of great players. Great players find ways to win, and if they put up great numbers, that is even better. I am very proud of our top guys' performance especially lately" said Manager Mark Clode. "One thing we do have to work on is Teodor Vaverka's facts. We didn't actually pass Classic for second place until tonight. I guess he was a profit saying that we were in second place on Monday. I'll have to get you to interview him more often" chuckled Clode.

"Ya I meant that we will be in second after next game" said Vaverka with a laughable grin on his face. "I wasn't confused of course not. But I'm not into that voodoo crap. I'm not a weird person or nothing. Oh boy... this is awkward."

The entire room laughed. The Gryphons now have 4 straight away games. The play FlyingHeadz tomorrow in Canada Cup play followed by Redman on Friday in league play, then the Brampton Capitals to close out the 2010 Canada Cup round-robin stage and eventually will travel to face HC SJ NB in the HF Boards final.
