Check Republic† - Heath Koenig named MVP; End of season review
Heath Koenig, second line forward, has been named this season's MVP by his teammates. He led the team in points, followed closely by Mark Lilly. Lilly said "Heath scores at the best times for us. The official league stats don't even tell the story. During our friendlies, he's always the one getting the goals when we need it the most," even though Lilly is the captain.
The season in review, meanwhile, started out with Check Republic getting a new general manager in reverist. "I was determined to make this my team, and that meant scheduling more friendlies." He was right about that, even if it meant losing more. The overall team record was 39-35-2 over the course of 76 games. The friendly record was 12-17-2, while the league regular season record was 23-15. Losing a tighter-than-it-looked opening series to eventual league-champ VT 2-0, Check Republic bounced back to win their next series over the Philadelphia Olympians in a sweep. In the final series, they dropped the first game on the road, 3-1.
"There was a lot of pressure. I mean, it's lose and you're done at that point," remaked goalie Ken Frazier. Several players, including Koenig and his brother Chris, Lilly, Danny Patten and Allan Harrington stepped up to take the next game at the Logic Center, 3-1. The final game, on the road, Coach Otto had one line to say to his team: "Only you can control how you play tonight." With that, the boys went out and picked up a 5-4 shootout win to take the series and 5th place!
"This was a great improvement on last year, and I'm really proud of the guys," reverist remarked. When asked about next season, he smirked a little before responding. "Well, we will have to wait on that one."
