Check Republic† - Championship and the New Reality
With last season's league II.3 championship in the playoffs behind them, we caught up with team GM reverist recently and asked him some questions concerning their season past and the upcoming challenges of I.1.
US: How important was it to you to win the championship last season?
reverist: It was so incredibly important. After last season, we thought we should have won, or at least been playing for promotion. I told the guys, "hold on to this feeling. You'll remember it all the way to the playoffs next year." And we did.
US: What was it like acquiring Laurens Morent, and having to bench Andrej Rybak?
reverist: There's no one like Rybak. I hated putting him on the bench. It just seemed like we needed a spark; something to get us through to the next level. Morent has been a great goalie. He's the best in Division II, as far as I'm concerned.
US: Were there any problems with team loyalty?
reverist: Absolutely not. For one, Rybak's a team player. Second, Sanderson [the team captain] has those guys. They'll follow him anywhere out there on the ice or in the locker room.
US: What can we look forward to this season?
reverist: Well, I'm a realist. I said [six seasons ago] it was gonna take us a few seasons, but we'd win a championship. And we won two. But a lot of people don't remember what it was like when I first came on. Edmund Samuel, Harrington, and Ivan can tell you. They were there! It was awful [laughs]...but we got through it with patience. The fans are going to need to be patient. We're gonna lose a lot of games out of the gate. We'll do our best this season, but it's going to take a while.
US: I understand, Division I is tough. What's this I hear about Check Republic joining a tournament?
reverist: I know, I gave a moratorium on tournaments last year. No one liked that really. But we needed to focus. This tourney is really good, and I like our chances for winning.
US: Are there any hotshot players you're targeting this season?
reverist: You know I can't answer that! But we're always looking for talent the world over. Even in our own sports academy. We're hoping to find and train the best of the best, so that we can reload season after season to become the best this country has.
US: Good luck to you and Check Republic this season.
reverist: Thanks my friend.
