Kanada Vancouver Giants† - Giant Report - Issue 6 and NHL predictions

The Giants have this season shown so far why they deserve to be in the top league in Canada, taking control of II.2 with a 5 point lead after today’s game. Today they stomped on the tomatos 3-1, led by an impressive performance from backup goaltender Mile Micic, who made 31 saves on 32 shots to preserve the win. With the win, the Giants are 13-1-0-1-1 in 16 games and have 42 points. The Giants however face tough competition in the next week, facing the cKs on Friday and Jay’s Blinds next Monday, the #3 and #2 teams respectively. The Giants are on pace for what would be a major milestone for the club, a 100 point season. They credit their success to coach Yannick Abrahams’ defence-first style of play, which has led to only 21 goals against, and amazingly, only 1 power play goal against! That’s a 96% PK percentage. There is nothing but positives so far in the Giant’s season, and only time will tell now if it’s good enough to make it to I.1 next season.

In player news, the Giants made a big move on right wing, picking up Bonifac Bistak from the market two weeks ago. The Giants however, said they were very surprised that they got this move done. “We really got a steal in this player, he’s young, has great training, and can make a difference on the score sheet in every game he plays.” said general manager Javi Coro when asked about Bistak. And Coro was right, in 5 games Bistak has already racked up 3 goals and 4 points on the third line. With Flatts, Bradbury, and Bistak on the right wing, the Giants are looking dangerous on that side of the ice.

The National Cup is underway and the Giants are in their highest ranking ever at tournament start, taking the 15th seed. Since then, the Giants have amazingly moved up 3 spots and have the 12th best OTR in Canada. In their first game, the Giants laid a beating on the inactive St-Lucien, beating them 11-0 which included goals from 9 different players. In tomorrow’s match-up, the Giants will play fellow B.C. club VICTORIA COUGARS (caps included). The Giants are aiming for another top 8 finish, which would be their 4th straight quarterfinal appearance, a feat which no other club has done in Canada.

Now, with one month to go until the NHL starts its season, I thought that I would make my predictions on division winners and an early cup pick right now...so here they are:

WESTERN CONFERENCE:
Central Division: Detroit Red Wings
Northwest Division: Vancouver Canucks*
Pacific Division: LA Kings

EASTERN CONFERENCE:
Atlantic Division: New Jersey Devils
Northeast Division: Boston Bruins
Southeast Division: Washington Capitals*

The star symbolizes who I think will win the conference. Now for my Stanley cup prediction....I might sound like a homer here but I predict it will be Vancouver over New Jersey in 7 games for the Stanley Cup. If Luongo plays like he did in his first season with Vancouver, the Canucks are easily one of the best if not the best in the league right now. Who do you think will win the Stanley Cup? Make a response with your predictions are we’ll see who’s right in June.
