Spankers† - Ugly player elbowed, Spankers squeek out a win!
The Philadelphia Spankers don't mind winning by one.
Andrej Hlaváč scored 13:04 into the second period to give the Spankers a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Dragon Slayers on Friday afternoon.
Spankers have one win and one tie against the Dragon Slayers this season. The Spankers beat the Dragon Slayers 4-2 several weeks back.
The Spankers were prepared for a tough battle today against the team that refused to be bested in the rankings by the Spankers despite their late season charge fueled by a 10 game winning streak.
At 14:39 into the first period Spankers’ Lloyd Blackburn elbowed Dragon Slayers’ Tory Babcock in the face. When asked about it at the press conference after the game, Blackburn stated “I don’t know why I did it exactly. I guess I was mad at him because I was jealous. I’m used to being the guy on the ice with the worst name. Then I heard they had a guy named ‘Tory’ on their roster. Just as I suspected the guy was horse-faced. You know, kind of like Sidney Crosby. I think that’s why I did it. I’ll probably do it again next week too. With a face like that, who can’t elbow it?”
This game was really about the goalies though, who both came through with spectacular performances. Frederick Saylor of the Slayers and Peter Toth of the Spankers both seemed insistent on keeping the puck out of their nets. Ultimately the Dragon Slayers let their goalie down as they allowed him to be outshot 27-15. Saylor shook his head at the team at the end of the game, and rightly so. With penalties favoring Slayers 3-1, Slayers should have been able to outshoot Spankers.
Spankers are not being complacent though. They know they’re playing a team their equal and expect that they’ll have to work hard to earn their win when they return home on Monday.
