Kanada Royal City Redshift - Royal City Spectra - V4E4: Redshift Claim First Victory in International Play

The Royal City Redshift hosted Danish I.1 club Ooops today in front of a sold-out rocking Veterans Memorial Arena. What the were treated to, was history in the making.

Those who were there won't remember it as a pretty game. It was a game with few shots and even fewer scoring changes. It was a game where players didn't want to make a mistake, you could see their hands gripping their sticks extra hard. With that in mind, it was no surprise that the match was a low-scoring affair. For all but 6 minutes, that's how it was. However, in those 6 minutes, it was anyone's game.

Seconds into the third period Veterans Memorial Arena erupted as Steve Magditsch broke the deadlock. With that, players were no longer gripping their sticks tight. Moments later the Redshift found themselves on a 5-on-3 powerplay which they converted to take a 2-0 lead. The lead would last all of three minutes when Ooops would score to cut the deficit to 2-1. With that outburst of action and a 2-1 lead, the goalies would settle down once more allowing the Redshift to skate to a 2-1 victory.

"We love playing at home, and know that we need these wins at home to have a chance at advancing. Newts (Tim Newton) was exceptional for us. He wasn't tested as often as in games past, but he was sharp when called upon. He made the big saves when we needed them most. That's why we keep him around, even if he is an old guy" said Guy Richard who just happens to be the oldest guy on the club. Both he and Tyler Dearden, recently acquired for the competition, are 29 and upcoming UFAs over the course of this season. "Obviously I want to stay here, but it may be time to move on. My playing time is limited and I can contribute more elsewhere. That being said, if they match the offer coming my way, I'll be thrilled to stay" said Richard who is one of two remaining Redshift/Gryphon originals.

The fans took to the streets after the game, chanting various phrases. One fan even chanted "Stoney Creek Saints Who!?!?!" which is of no relevance to the game. Perhaps that one fan in particular doesn't care for sexy large arenas. We'll never know. The moral of the story is, it was a great day to be a Redshift fan. But tomorrow is another day and with that a new challenge this time in the form of the always challenging Thunder HC.
