Canadá Bricktown TwigStarz - Starz Survive Late Rally, Stun Weiser in OT

19.11.21
Bricktown

After being up 2-0 through 40 minutes, and looking like they were going to cruise to a victory on the back of stud goalie Denver Caven, the TwigStarz narrowly squeaked out a 3-2 overtime win, courtesy of an Aaron Deschenes goal.

The young forward tried to fool Weiser netminder Honore Howey with a slick Datsyukian deke, but couldn't lift it; keeping with it however, he slammed the rebound into the back of the net, Howey's outstretched pad not strong enough to keep it out.

Assists on the game winner went to main man, Clinton Cote, who also chimed in with a goal of his own, and, fittingly enough, the nights first star, Denver Caven; without whom there would be no chance of an OT miracle.

The game started out well for Bricktown, going up 2-0 early, on a powerplay tally by Todd Dresser (assists to Deschenes and Liburd), and a second by Cote, to head into the first intermission in some comfort.

The second saw no goals, as a strong defensive effort by the Starz kept Weiser at bay. Denver Caven was called upon a handful of times, once spectacularly denying a 2 on 0 with a acrobatic glove save, twisting around and denying Alexandre Chiasson of a sure goal, bringing the sellout crowd of 11 700 to their feet. Chants of Caven, Caven closed out the period, and it was really looking like an shutout was in the cards.

But the hockey gods can be cruel, and here they definitely had their eyes on this outcome, as at the 9:20 mark of the third period, Rodger Gaughan broke the goose egg with a perfectly placed wrist shot under the glove of the Starz goaltender.

That got the air back in the sails of the Quebecois outfit, as they fired shot after shot Cavens way, but he was up to the task. As the minutes wore down, the crowd got louder and louder, bidding adieu to each minute with a raucous cheer.

8 minutes, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, goalie to the bench, 1, but with 33 seconds left, and the extra man on, Alton Northrup undressed the Bricktown D and
slid one in five-hole on Denver Caven.

The arena went silent.

Everyone was in disbelief.

From 2-0, a party mood, to 2-2, in 10 mins.

As the time wound down, nerves were tested, the away team pushed for a winner, but their efforts were cut short as the buzzer sounded.

But, as we all know, you've gotta be good to be lucky, and lucky to be good, and I think the hockey gods were feeling for this side, for all the chances Weiser had in the OT, it only took one bounce, one chance, for the game to be gifted back.

A soft dump in, a calm stop behind the net and a perfect feed for a breakaway. An 19 year old playing well beyond his years. And a rebound so inviting it was begging to be put in.

Bricktown, the season may only be 3 games old, but you've hit a high that may not be reached again.

What a night.
