Check Republic† - Ready for the playoffs?
The regular season 5 ended today with a 2-0 home victory over third-place Faketown Fakemascots. Check Republic finished first overall with 110 points (36 wins, one OT win, one loss). They are in the middle of an incredible season, one in which they have gone 66-9-7. They're riding the wave of a 35-game unbeaten streak (which is almost sure to end in the playoffs).
Loris Schai, the team's leader in league points with 63 (29 goals, 34 assists) said this: "I am excited for where this team is going. We are very talented, but very focused." Echoing that theme was captain Mark Lilly. "We don't take anything for granted. We aren't even guaranteed the chance to advance yet. All this means is we have home ice."
This is a drastic turnaround from the team of three seasons ago. Reverist made a promise then that as incoming GM he would have this team promoted to Division II within five seasons. Last season the team reached the semifinals, but lost. Reverist was widely criticized for sticking with Ken Frazier, but conventional wisdom said they needed a goalie from the Sports Academy. Andrej Rybak was purchased off the market instead, and he has rewarded the team.
The first round is against the eighth-seeded Boston Bashers at home on Friday night. Tickets are on sale now! The next press release will be a game recap as well as interviews with the players and staff!
