Jako syn řezníka příliš hokejového talentu nepobral. Jeho buldočí povaha však neušla pozornosti trenéra nově budovaného týmu Jihlava Kings a tak se velmi brzy objevil v dresu A-týmu. Hned v 1. sezoně získal titul nejproduktivnějšího obránce I.1 ligy, což mu v letech následujících spíše svazovalo ruce zodpovědností.
