Skillz That Killz† - S11:01 A Fresh Start
A new league means new hope for Skillz fans. After 3 seasons of struggling in I.1, the league finally decided that Skillz That Killz was not fit for the top tier in Canada. As expected, fans did not take kindly to the relegation; a few games in the second tier may be enough to change the minds of some of the fans. While losing quickly became the norm in I.1, winning seems to be the new trend to get used to in II.3. Four games into the season and Skillz That Killz seem to be a top team in II.3. Still undefeated at this stage in the season and with no signs of slowing down, fans are rapidly jumping back onto the bandwagon which they left after a horrible stint in I.1.
Whether or not Skillz can emerge as the team to beat in II.3 has yet to be seen. Having played four of the bottom five teams thus far this season it may be that the success of Skillz could be vastly inflated. The next four games should prove to be more of a challenge for the team. Over the next four games Skillz That Killz must face two other undefeated teams as well as some other competitive teams. When asked what he thought of the upcoming games Greg McFarlane, newly appointed Alternate Captain, had this to say, “Ya. It’s gonna be a tough couple of games, but we’ve been through worse. We have a good team and I think we‘ve proved it so far this season. No reason why we shouldn’t be able to keep winning.”
Regardless of the results of the upcoming games management sees a lot of potential in the team. “We’ve built a solid team here, and we have every confidence in their ability to perform in this tier, and hopefully be able to get back into the top tier where I believe they belong,” was all that Jax45 would say regarding the teams current situation in II.3. When asked about the recent doubts that fans have had regarding goaltender Jerome Gillett he had this to say, “We are not looking for a replacement for Jerome. He has been a rock, on which the team has leant for the past several seasons. Our failures were not his fault, we lost as a team and now we were winning as a team.” Not only are the staff behind Gillett all the way but his team supports him as well. Leading scorer Joel Svensson expressed his approval when asked about the performance of Gillett in the first 4 games of the season. “Jerome has been fantastic. Three shutouts in the first three games and a three star selection every game. That’s pretty impressive.”
Captain Pat Herrera is set to become a free agent in the coming week and when asked if the stress of the matter was weighing in on him and possibly affecting his gameplay, all he would say was, “I love the team, and have no intention of leaving.” Around since season 1 Herrera has been the captain of the team since the departure of Bob Bouchard in season three, and is the team’s all-time leading scorer. Herrera seems confident in the team’s ability to keep him on the team. Perhaps he believes that he will not be too expensive due to his age. Regardless, it is clear that both he and his team want him around for the long haul.
